History of Murton

Murton is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a few miles south-west of Sunderland. It was for over a century a productive coal mining village, with the mine owned by the South Hetton Coal Company. The mine employed over 1000 men at its peak and featured in the Picture Post article showing the 'vesting' of the mine at nationalisation in 1947. During this time the village was trying to evolve from the end of the war. Although the Local cricket team was doing very well.

Now the old spoil heaps have been redeveloped into a retail outlet Dalton Park. Which has brought in some much needed employment opportunities. As employment has been a risky issue in this area.
